Tangerine:Class to Present at UNESCO Mobile Learning Week

RTI International will present Tangerine:Class at the UNESCO Mobile Learning Week in Paris, France, February 18-22. The UNESCO Mobile Learning Week seeks to address how mobile technologies can be used to further the Education For All (EFA), specifically looking at:

  • the role of mobile learning in increasing adult and childhood literacy
  • how mobile technology can improve quality of education (including supporting teachers)
  • exploring mobile learning to improve gender equality in education

The Tangerine team will present Tangerine:Class, which is now being used in the field by the USAID-supported Kenya PRIMR project (Kenya Primary Math and Reading).  The presentation will discuss the development of Tangerine:Class as an extension of Tangerine, and will demonstrate the software to show how digital formative assessment is being used to improve childhood literacy and quality of education in low resource settings.

Tangerine:Class enables teachers to administer rapid literacy and numeracy assessments and receive immediate, applicable feedback on student performance. Tangerine:Class enables teachers to conduct individual and class assessments offline, and to access analytics on-demand, all on a highly mobile Android tablet. These analytics allow teachers to target specific educational efforts and track class progress, and can even generate reports, tables and graphs depicting learner progression.

Tangerine:Class also allows teachers to compare class results with established benchmarks, and provides timely advice on how to refocus instruction to ensure adherence.  Through this technology, Tangerine:Class provides teachers the tools to identify in real time the specific learning needs of their students and map these to targeted instruction. In the Kenya/PRIMR project, Tangerine:Class is fully adapted in Swahili and aligned with school curricula.
